When Pilgrims Way Primary School presented the Nativity story the other day, it was done with characteristic enthusiasm and exuberance, with lots of lovely costumes, singing and the usual range of performances from the very confident to the terrified. But one thing stood out for me, and that was the faithfulness to the story, not just by having all the relevant figures there (as well as a few extras of course!) but by the intensity with which the message was given; and one part of that message came out very clearly as it does in our reading today: nothing is impossible with God.
At this stage in the year, working out what I am going to say to the Midnight Mass, the 9am, and the Family Communion congregations on Christmas Eve/Day, I find I haven't got much to say on Advent 4, except to affirm what the Angel said to Mary, a promise that goes with us into the New Year and every time we feel at a dead end: nothing is impossible with God.
Hear that promise, take it to heart, it is for you. Now we bring Advent to a close and look towards the event that gives the signal to our hopes, just as Easter gives us the signal to believe in the resurrection and the life everlasting. Today we can believe and prepare to celebrate that God is with us; and by that reality all sorts of things become possible.
Amen
